My artwork Reconnaissance has been juried into The 24th Arts in Harmony 2019 Annual International Show! The main show will be at Hopkins Center for the Arts, 1111 Mainstreet, Hopkins, MN 55343, with show dates of Thursday, January 10 – Sunday, February 17, 2019.
There are awards and two subsequent traveling shows as well, so we’ll see if my work is selected for any of those too!

Juror Cathy Kline awarded my painting Camelflage with an Honorable Mention at this year’s Leavenworth County Artists Association Holiday Art Gala. I had a nice time attending the reception and awards ceremony, although it was the same evening as USM’s Fall 2018 Student Art Exhibition opening reception so it was a busy, art-filled night!
The Leavenworth County Artists Association is hosting their annual Holiday Art Gala, and I’m participating this year by exhibiting two pieces, Camelflage and Reconnaissance.

I have been juried into the Main Street Arts’ 5th annual Small Works exhibition, Small Works 2018, in the Main Street Arts Gallery in Clifton Springs, NY! The juror for Small Works 2018 is Rick Pirozzolo, the executive director and curator at the Arnot Art Museum in Elmira, NY. Rick selected my painting Temerity for inclusion. The show will be open from December 1, 2018 – January 4, 2019.

I am exhibiting in the Quotidiana Bellezza traveling exhibition set up by XIV Giornata del Contemporaneo AMACI. The first of the exhibition sites is in the Museo Civico Archeologico Genna Maria in Villanovaforru, Italy, with further sites to be announced.
My sculpture Albrechare has been accepted into Prairie Village Arts Council’s State of the Arts 2018 annual exhibition juried by Marissa Starke.
It is held in the R. G. Endres Gallery located in the municipal building 7700 Mission Road, Prairie Village, KS. The exhibition runs annually during the month of October with a Gala Reception on the second Friday of October (this year that’s October 12th, 2018) at 6:00pm. The normal gallery hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.
Exciting news - my painting Reconnaissance has been selected for inclusion in this competitive juried exhibition from the International Society of Acrylic Painters! The juror for this years' show is Jan Martin McGuire. Check it out!
I was selected to take part in this competitive juried exhibition, Landscapes and Seascapes, at 311 Gallery in Raleigh, NC. The jurors elected to include my painting Reconnaissance. Sorry for the break in updates - I ended up being in several places without internet as I'll be discussing! Anyway, back to the journal...
It turned out Sunday ended up not being so good for Sella either, and I had gotten wrapped up in a painting, so I had another studio day. Then Monday was spent getting ready for the solo exhibition Noemi had arranged for me in La Casa Museo Orlando Hernandez (The Orlando Hernandez House Museum); we got the keys to the place from the local government and scoped it out, prepared the exhibition room, and got double-sided mounting tape to help secure my pieces to the walls. Tuesday evening was my opening, but that morning Noemi had arranged for me to visit the northern part of the island's recycling center for a tour as a part of a group (she had originally planned to come as well, but ended up needing to sit for state exams that day). I was a little skeptical of how interesting it would be and also had yet to install the artwork or shop for the reception refreshments, but Noemi said she thought it would take around an hour and really wanted me to go. So I went! It actually took three and a half hours, and only about half an hour of it was interesting (touring the actual facilities). The other three hours involved watching videos and protracted lectures and Q&As about the importance and minutiae of recycling - in my case, at least, preaching to the bored choir. But I got back with - just! - enough time to eat lunch, install my artwork, and run to SPAR to buy some refreshments. The reception went well, and then the rest of the week I babysat the exhibition (with no internet) and started some new pieces from within the exhibition itself - a sort of performance art in its own way! On Friday I did an artist lecture and a demo of QuickCure Clay, and then later on another exhibition opened up in an adjoining space, and their reception also flooded over into mine and I had a hopping second reception-of-sorts as well.
Over the weekend Noemi took me to the north to see the towns of Arucas and Gáldar, and we visited the Painted Cave museum, where we got a chance to glimpse aboriginal cave paintings from a carefully monitored chamber so as to attempt to preserve what's left of the paintings after severe degradation from tourists during the late 70's and 80's. Noemi also thought I should try paragliding, so she arranged for a friend to take me up in a tandem parachute! I'm up for new things, so I did it, and I'm glad I had the experience - but I didn't enjoy it very much. I get pretty motion sick, and the turning and swooping set it off quite strongly. I also got bored with it after the first few minutes - we just sort of looped back and forth over the same bit of land, and once I'd taken it in... the views were extremely similar to what you'd see out of an airplane, so it felt more normal than I would've thought. I love scuba diving, though, and I know that is not everyone's bag, so I'm still pleased I gave paragliding a go. On Sunday we visited the Maspalomas area so that I could see the sand dunes, which were beautiful, and I got a taste of the Maspalomas beach as well which is a tourist hotspot (it turns into Playa del Ingles, which is the most well known) and was absolutely crammed with people. I prefer the beach at Las Canteras in Las Palmas or in Arinaga, honestly. Then we went up to see Sella, finally, and her place was great! She runs a retreat center called EcoTara where groups with instructors book in to run yoga and other health and lifestyle retreats. We spent a lazy afternoon there, and the drives along the way both coming and going were spectacular as well.
Then we took my show down (the other exhibition in the adjoining space kindly babysat mine as well over the weekend), and I went down to Arinaga to rejoin Silviu, who had been busy scoping out opportunities for me to have a second exhibition down there, because he's just that lovely of a person. We spent the next day figuring out where I'd have the second show, and La Canela y Hierbabuena said they'd love to have me.
I submitted two pieces (All Out and City Solstice) for consideration in this juried alumni show held during Penn's Alumni Weekend, and despite strong preference being given to submissions from artists definitely attending the event, my entries were also accepted! (My own attendance is quite unlikely unless I happen to end up in the area at the same time, so I said no to definitely attending.)
So if you happen to be on or near Penn's campus from May 11-25, you should stop in to the Burrison Gallery to check them out.

I have another group exhibition coming up! My mixed media painting Littoral Layers was accepted into the Art Reach of Mid-Michigan's Climate Change Juried Show. 16 artists were selected to exhibit in this national exhibition.
The exhibition, held in the Morey Family Gallery at 111 E. Broadway St., Mt. Pleasant, MI 48858, opens on April 4th and runs through April 28th. Here are a few more photos from my Finding Light exhibition currently up in USM's Goppert Gallery! I'm taking photos in batches (it is very hard to get good photos in low-light settings, so I take some, see if I have any good ones, post, and repeat!). It's not hard to take photos of the non-interactive parts of the show, so I haven't been focusing on those just yet since it's more important to figure out the photography for the interactive pieces since they're so tough to capture! So first up - here are some additional photos of All That I See. The algae that is growing on the sculpture is a local species - I took water from USM's pond and have been cycling it and keeping it alive and flourishing for several months now within the sculpture's glass container.
This Friday was my opening reception for my Goppert Gallery exhibition Finding Light. I will share a more comprehensive set of photos with you in a bit, but here's a teaser! The show is up through March 9th if you want to experience it firsthand.

My painting City Solstice has been awarded Honorable Mention at Confluence Art Gallery's 2017 Wildlife Arts and Photography Exhibition. For this juried show, there were 121 artworks submitted for consideration by 79 artists. Jurors Lisa Ober and Dana Holm selected 56 artworks by 31 artists for the online exhibition, and selected 18 artworks including my own for awards and inclusion in the Green Door Art Gallery exhibition outside of St. Louis.

I'm participating in the Lincoln Gallery 2017 Regional Fine Art Show! I actually had all three entered pieces accepted, but I didn't do the math right on two of the pieces' return dates from a different show which they were at the time (the Irving Art Association's exhibition) so I was only able to send one - Dominion, my new giant anteater painting.

Jurors Kristin Beal and Kate Van Steenhuyse selected my painting Perfect Form for inclusion in the 2017 Arts Council Juried Exhibition held in Wichita, KS. They winnowed down over 100 applicants and nearly 500 images by selecting work from 44 artists.
The exhibition will open on Friday, October 20th, with a Final Friday reception on Friday, October 27th from 6 to 8pm, and will run through Thursday, November 9th. This past Thursday I installed a new solo exhibition, Souvenirs, at the Mr. and Mrs. F.L. Schlagle Library & Environmental Learning Center Gallery in North Kansas City right off of Wyandotte County Lake. It is a beautiful place, and I took advantage of the lovely fall afternoon by wandering around the environmental library, park, and trails after I completed the show installation.
Souvenirs will run from September 28th through the end of the year, with a tentative closing date of January 3rd. The hours of operation are Monday-Friday 9am-5pm and the third Saturday of the month 9am-5pm, and the address is 4051 West Dr, Kansas City, KS 66109.
My painting Perspective won second place in the Water Media category at the Irving Art Association's 2017 16th National Animal Art Juried Competition with juror Patsy Lindamood!
