Advance to Gogh Show is Up - With My Scra-baa Junior Piece!

KTIV chose to use footage of me looking at artwork to illustrate their article about the Advance to Gogh event.

Just a reminder that I’m participating in a large group exhibition of over 40 Siouxland artists: Advance to Gogh. The opening artwalk receptions for this event (held at the Sioux City Art Center, Gallery 103, Three Rivers Gallery, Art SUX, and Vangarde Arts) was on Thursday, July 11th. I’m unclear on exactly when each of the participating venues will take down the show, but I believe it’s up at least through mid-August.

To the right, you can see an image of me looking at some of the exhibited artworks which was published by KTIV, and if you check the article and video out there’s more footage of me at the reception as well as their own event description and interviews.

In case you can’t make it, though, I’d like to share with you some images of what I did! In the random lottery, I drew the gameboard Scrabble Junior.

The original Scrabble Junior game board.

I decided to keep the illustration and prompt for “sheep” and then painted over all the rest of the illustrations and prompts, color matching with paint to “restore” the rest of the board to a clean, new appearance. Next, I painted a lamb at the base, added the words “& Shelby” to the wordmark, and carefully redrew the grid lines with marker.

Finally, I added words for sheep in many languages to illustrate how one plays Scra-baa Junior!

This is Scra-baa Junior (“A ewe-nique edition!”), mixed media including acrylic, marker, varnish, and glue on Scrabble Junior game board with game tiles, 2024.

More Advocate Press Coverage of My LSU SVM Artist Residency!

The Advocate just published this feature on the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine Dean and his vision for the future, which of course includes founding the artist residency I was the first to complete last year! It includes one of my paintings as well (see my screenshot to the right).

Morningside Student Designed the New Sioux City Garden Club Logo!

Miriam Moore’s new Sioux City Garden Club logo design!

I love to partner with community organizations in art department coursework with beneficial, real-world projects. This semester, I agreed to host a design competition within our graphic design program for the Sioux City Garden Club! Their president, La Vone Sopher, reached out to me and we worked out a plan: students in Graphic Design I and II would submit logo designs, and the club would proffer a $50 first place (and use that logo) as well as a $25 second place prize.

Students in these two courses submitted 26 designs, and there were a lot of quality options for the garden club to choose from! The board winnowed it down to six, and had the club members vote to select their first and second place designs. Graphic design and history major Miriam Moore’s logo was the winner!

I like to take on these sorts of projects - even though it invariably adds to my workload - because students get to work with actual clients, the top designers receive compensation, and all students create portfolio pieces while the winner sees their work enter the community. It also raises both the winning artists’ and our art department’s visibility… particularly when we issue press releases about the successful conclusion of the partnership!

Here’s the Morningside University press release (complete with a quote from me), which was picked up by KWIT and a KTIV television interview.

Concordia High School Pause PAWS Speaker Event and Radio Interview

Below is the YouTube video of my speech given on Friday, February 17, 2023 in the Pause PAWS notable alumni speaker series at Concordia High School (CHS), and here’s a link to our KNCK radio interview, embedded into the NCK Today article, “Professional Artist and Educator Shelby Prindaville Presents to Concordia High School Students.” My solo show in the Frank Carlson Design Room is in connection with this speaker event.

I wasn’t expecting to receive any gifts, so when the CHS Student Council President Jenna McFadden presented me with a framed honorary letter with an explanatory plaque at the end of my speech (see the photo in the NCK Today article image below), I was surprised and humbled! I had a great time connecting with the CHS student body, got to see some great student artwork (one such talented artist is Daegan DeGraff - check out her Facebook artist page!), and really appreciated getting to work with Brandt Hutchinson and his colleagues in this community service.

NCK Today Coverage of Solo Show and Guest Speaker Event

Screenshot of the NCK Today press coverage.

I grew up in Concordia, Kansas, and attended high school at Concordia High School (CHS). Recently, CHS Career and Community Coordinator Brandt Hutchinson reached out and invited me to join their notable alumni speaker series called Pause PAWS.

I agreed as long as we arranged for an exhibition of my artwork at the same time; if I’m going to be speaking about my career as a professional artist, it is important to me that the audience has a chance to see my artwork firsthand. Brandt immediately coordinated with the Frank Carlson Library to host a solo show in the Frank Carlson Design Room.

The show installation, opening reception, and lecture are all coming up this week! Here’s the first piece of press about it, via NCK Today. As the article shares, “Shelby will be speaking to current Concordia High School students from 9 am to 9:30 am on Thursday, February 16th in the historic CHS Auditorium.  The presentation will be live-streamed for the general public by Chris Stiles' high school video production team on their YouTube channel, USD 333 Media Productions.

The Frank Carlson Library will be hosting Shelby's art exhibit from February 17th to March 3rd.  The public is welcome to meet the artist by attending the opening reception for the exhibit from 5 pm to 6 pm on Thursday, February 16th at the Frank Carlson Library.”

Morningside University News and the Morningsider Lite

The Morningside University News got in on the press action surrounding the 2022 Walker Awards, publishing “Christopherson, Paulsen, and Prindaville named 2022 Sharon Walker Faculty Excellence Award Winners” on December 7, 2022.

In addition, the Morningsider Lite newsletter republished the above article as well as the piece the Morningside University News produced earlier this fall on my veterinary school residency in its Volume 3, Issue 2 in December 2022.

The Advocate Feature Article!

The Advocate writer Robin Miller wrote up a lovely feature article for The Advocate on me, “LSU Vet School hosts first-ever resident artist: Combines clinical labs to create art” which was digitally published yesterday! (It hasn’t yet come out in the print version - I think Robin mentioned it will be in the Saturday edition.) Below is just a screenshot of the intro, but you should definitely follow the link above and read the whole piece!

The Advocate Press Coverage

Here’s a link to the piece, and a screenshot of the first paragraph (though there’s more to the article).

DASH Special Edition 2021 Publication

Back in mid-2018, DASH Literary Journal published my painting All Out. DASH editors recently reached back out to me to request my permission to republish it in their best-of retrospective DASH Special Edition 2021 to be published in December. I said yes, and provided updated contact information for the new contributor copies they kindly send out. Those just arrived in the mail!

Birdwatching!

A still from the video - I’m the birdwatcher in the striped shirt!

A still from the video - I’m the birdwatcher in the striped shirt!

I love spending time outdoors, and I enjoy opportunities to do so while learning, exercising, and having new experiences. On the first day of spring this year - March 20th - I joined some friends in a birding hike at the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center in Stone State Park. To our surprise, part of the way through a cameraman appeared to document the event for the local news!

In this ABC television affiliate KCAU 9 video clip, you’ll hear about what we were up to but also get a glimpse of me on the trail - I’m the birdwatcher in the striped shirt, black face mask, maroon hat, and grey backpack. On this hike, I learned how to focus binoculars and became a little more familiar with some of the more common birds in the region: the white-breasted nuthatch, the red-bellied woodpecker, and the downy and hairy woodpeckers (they look very similar but have different beak lengths). We also saw a couple of bald eagles and turkeys, though I had already been able to identify those!

Recent Article in the LSU Reveille About QCC

This summer has been so crazy that I haven’t been as on top of sharing my press coverage, but here’s a still fairly recent article from the LSU Reveille which gives my collaboration with Dr. John Pojman on 3P Quick Cure Clay a mention, “LSU professor creates QuickCure Clay, combining science, art, aiding wide range of artists.”
