New Artwork: Synthesis, and Upcoming Invitational Exibition

In late December I was invited to participate in an upcoming exhibition and fundraising support event called The Maskuerade for local art gallery Vangarde Arts which has, as is unfortunately the case with many arts organizations, suffered during the pandemic.

Vangarde Arts has been a great supporter of the arts in Sioux City as well as of Morningside College, so I happily agreed to participate. Vangarde provided each invited artist with a white cotton 3-ply face mask, and asked that each mask be made into a unique artwork. The pieces are then to be auctioned off with the proceeds going to support their organization.

This was more of a challenge than I think many viewers might realize for several reasons:

  • The substrate (the face mask) is rather small and of a defined form already, so there’s limited room to work.

  • As an artist, I think you want to embrace the media you’re working with - so making it unrecognizable as a face mask to me ends up defeating the purpose of the challenge.

  • While I think one could pretty easily paint on a cotton mask as a canvas, I question whether viewers will easily differentiate an original painting from an existing fabric print. This meant I felt I needed to get somewhat sculptural while still embracing the substrate and its intended function in order to really make it transform identifiably into an original artwork.

  • I didn’t want to lose my own artistic focus and hand - I wanted to make this piece work within my oeuvre rather than existing outside of it.

I mentally wrestled for weeks just in trying to develop a concept, and then with only a vague starting point in mind I then physically wrestled with the mask itself for a couple weeks to try to see if that manipulation would inspire me to come up with an artistic solution. Finally all the reflection and experimentation paid off, and with an idea in mind all I then had to do was execute it!

This is Synthesis, a wearable mixed media artwork including a white cotton mask, thread, acrylic, gel, Cladonia rangiferina “reindeer lichen,” Tillandsia usneoides “Spanish moss,” pine needles, and bark. Its dimensions are 7x13x4.5”.

The Maskuerade exhibition will have open house hours on February 11, 12, and 18 from 6-7pm in Vangarde Arts which is located at 416 Pierce St, Sioux City, IA 51101. An online auction will be open from February 15-18, and a silent auction and Fat Tuesday on Friday celebration will be held February 19 at 6pm with a live auction following at 7pm.

I'm A Geoselenic Artist!

An image of one of my paintings (Velocity, if you’re curious, as I went with my most recent work to date) is going to be sent to the Moon on a shielded microSD card in a 'Moonbox' from NASA contractor Astrobotic, so my work will be in a lunar digital archive! (Until radiation breaks through and wipes it away.)

A fellow space enthusiast who purchased a Moonbox to send microSD cards up and had extra storage available shared this opportunity with me (and others) and I excitedly submitted and was approved. I wanted to know what kind of exhibiting artist this will make me since international is no longer enough (and galactic seemed too broad), so I asked a bunch of friends and students what adjective means the Earth and Moon together.

There was a lot of speculation - interstellar also seems too broad, and the offerings of stratospheric, universal, lunatic (haha), and interplanetary didn’t fit the bill either. But my friend Bernie Langer came through with "geoselenic,” which is exactly the term I was looking for! (Apparently it’s of Hellenic derivation; Bernie also followed up with the Latin-derived “terralunar” which I like even better but which sadly hasn’t yet made it into a dictionary.)

Also, I can’t mention being a geoselenic artist without linking some relevant forefathers.

Wild Things International Exhibition at the Cultural Center for Cape Cod

I’ve had two pieces - Balancing Act and Camelflage - selected for exhibition at the Cultural Center for Cape Cod in Massachusetts’ international show Wild Things which opens November 20, 2020. Only 87 of 707 entries (the most they’ve ever received!) made the cut, so I’m pleased that 2 of mine are included in that number!

You can already view the online gallery here!

Upcoming: Webster Arts' Relationships National Exhibition

I have been juried by photographer and arts administrator Alison Erazmus into Webster Arts’ Relationships national exhibition! Of 586 submissions, 64 works were selected and my mixed media painting Littoral Layers is one of those 64.

The show will open with a Facebook Live event on November 17, 2020, at 7 pm CST. Additionally, all exhibition pieces will be available on their website http://webster-arts.org under the Exhibits tab.

I’m exhibiting my newest painting, Emerging, in the Art Museum of South Texas Chapman Gallery’s exhibition Creative Distancing: An Exhibition of Community Creativity. The show is being held online and awards will be selected by jurors and voted upon by the public at the close of the exhibition, so keep your fingers crossed for me! (I’m a little unclear as to how the voting will happen, but if I am notified I’ll share the news so that if you’d like to vote for my painting, you can.)

Upcoming: Artists Who Teach Exhibitions

I had to have a short hiatus from exhibiting due to moving and the resultant lack of a valid return shipping address for a few months… but the hiatus is over, and breaking it is Artists Who Teach, a pair of national juried exhibitions linked to National Arts in Education Week that is hosted at the Ellington-White Contemporary Art Gallery as well as the Fayetteville State University Rosenthal Art Gallery over the course of eight weeks from September 14 – November 2, 2019. Both galleries are located in the city of Fayetteville, NC.

Two of my acrylic paintings were juried in by Shane Booth, Soni Martin and Dwight Smith: Volcanic and City Solstice. Awards will be selected by a separate juror, Willis Bing Davis, at the opening reception on September 14th. Let me know if you happen to be in the area and can check either (or both) of the exhibitions out!

Upcoming: American Swedish Institute Arts North Exhibition

In an earlier post, I mentioned that my painting Reconnaissance won Second Place Overall in the 24th Arts in Harmony 2019 Annual International Show. Arts in Harmony 2019 has two subsequent traveling exhibitions that draw from the original show, and I was hoping that my work would be selected for either/both. Well, I learned that the traveling exhibitions are occurring simultaneously so no work can be in both of them - but I’m pleased to share that Reconnaissance was selected to be in the American Swedish Institute Arts North Exhibition from Feb 22 to Mar 17, 2019!

Here’s some information from their website:

Drawn from 680 entries from around the U.S. and five international countries,  Arts North is a popular juried competition now in its 24th year.  The 50 pieces on view at ASI, including paintings, prints, drawings, photographs, sculpture and textiles, were selected from an exhibition of 130 works shown at the Hopkins Center for the Arts.

The larger juried traveling show, modeled after the Minnesota State Fair Fine Arts competition, annually draws from approximately 700 initial entries from artists from throughout the US. who submit in various media divisions: acrylics, ceramics, glass, drawings, oils, mixed media, pastels, photography, prints, sculpture, sequential srt, textiles and watercolors.

This exhibition seeks to showcase the quality and diversity that artists bring to their work and to inspire viewers to explore ideas and learn more about options within each medium.

The American Swedish Institute is at 2600 Park Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN 55407. If you’re considering stopping by to see the Arts North Exhibition, here is the hours and admissions page from their website!

R.G. Endres Gallery Two-Person Exhibition Reception and Press

Last night was the opening reception for my two-person show at the R.G. Endres Gallery with accompanying artist Kathleen Kirch! It was an extremely cold evening - but it was nice and warm inside, with lovely Prairie Village Arts Council members and local viewers in attendance.

Here are some links to press coverage for the show:

And here are a few photos! I have 35 pieces on display, so if you want to see the full show you can still visit through February 27th.

Upcoming Exhibition: Two-Person Show at the R.G. Endres Gallery in Prairie Village, KS

I am excited to share that I was selected to exhibit at the R.G. Endres Gallery in the Prairie Village City Hall for the month of February in a large two-person show - I’m exhibiting 35 pieces, if that gives you a sense of the scale of the space!

(If you took a look at this post when I first published it, you’ll notice it has changed - it was initially scheduled to be a three-person show but one of the artists dropped out so I’ve edited it accordingly!)

Here’s the (revised) press release the Prairie Village Arts Council sent out:

February Exhibition at R.G. Endres Gallery

Wildlife and the beauty of the natural world will be the dominant theme of the February Exhibit at the R.G. Endres Gallery in the Prairie Village City Hall, 7700 Mission Road, Prairie Village, KS 66208. Regional artists Kathleen Kirch of Gardner and Shelby Prindaville of Leavenworth will display their works in oils, acrylics, and watercolors.

Kathleen Kirch, an avid hiker and outdoors enthusiast, relates that her paintings of wildlife are inspired by her spiritual connection to the places she has visited.  Complimenting these works, Shelby Prindaville, the Art Program Director and Assistant Professor of Art at the University of St. Mary in Leavenworth, expresses the ethereal beauty of nature in her watercolors, acrylics, and mixed media.

The exhibit will run from February 4 through February 27 at the R.G. Endres Gallery during business hours of the City Hall.  A reception with the artists will be held on Friday, February 8; 6:00-7:00 PM.

Second Place Overall in the 24th Arts in Harmony 2019 Annual International Show

I’m happy to share that my painting Reconnaissance won Second Place Overall in the 24th Arts in Harmony 2019 Annual International Show! Arts in Harmony is a broad juried international exhibition with no discipline restrictions or show theme. As you may have read in my previous post about the show, it will continue to be viewable at the Hopkins Center for the Arts, 1111 Mainstreet, Hopkins, MN 55343, through Sunday, February 17, 2019. There are two subsequent traveling shows as well, so we’ll see if my work is selected for either or both of those once the main show ends.

Winning this award was a particularly pleasing result because for a couple weeks I thought Reconnaissance might not have even made it to the gallery space and instead ended up in a pile of undeliverable mail somewhere! For the first time ever in many years of shipping, the UPS staff member who created my shipping labels accidentally voided the first label - sending it from my address to the show pickup location - from UPS’s system when they created the prepaid return label instead of adding the prepaid return to my account as a second label. This meant that even though there was a shipping label on the box, UPS itself had no tracking ability or even any documentation at all that I had shipped a box with them, and scanners wouldn’t register system information about that label either. Luckily, the workers who handled my box’s transit must have relied on the good old-fashioned paper label with addresses in order to get it to its destination, because it clearly arrived on schedule!

Upcoming Exhibition: The 24th Arts in Harmony 2019 Annual International Show

My artwork Reconnaissance has been juried into The 24th Arts in Harmony 2019 Annual International Show! The main show will be at Hopkins Center for the Arts, 1111 Mainstreet, Hopkins, MN 55343, with show dates of Thursday, January 10 – Sunday, February 17, 2019.

There are awards and two subsequent traveling shows as well, so we’ll see if my work is selected for any of those too!

Honorable Mention at the LCAA Holiday Art Gala 2018

Juror Cathy Kline awarded my painting Camelflage with an Honorable Mention at this year’s Leavenworth County Artists Association Holiday Art Gala. I had a nice time attending the reception and awards ceremony, although it was the same evening as USM’s Fall 2018 Student Art Exhibition opening reception so it was a busy, art-filled night!

Upcoming Exhibition: Leavenworth County Artists Association Holiday Art Gala 2018

The Leavenworth County Artists Association is hosting their annual Holiday Art Gala, and I’m participating this year by exhibiting two pieces, Camelflage and Reconnaissance.

Exhibition dates: December 7-15
Exhibition hours: Monday-Friday 9am-4pm
Gala opening reception (no admissions charge): Friday, December 7th 5-8pm, awards announced at 7:30pm

The show is held in the Leavenworth Heritage Center at 109 Delaware St, Leavenworth, Kansas.

I intend to attend the opening reception (probably going over at 7pm or so), so if you’re around and want to drop by as well I’d love to see you there!
