Upcoming: Cultural Corner Art Guild & Gallery Exhibition

I have ten ceramic pieces in the upcoming Cultural Corner Art Guild & Gallery’s Pottery, Glass & Jewels Exhibition in Chillicothe, Missouri! My good friend Susan Nelson will also have work on display, so you should really check this show out if you have the opportunity.

The show will run from October 5 - November 15, 2024 with a closing reception on Friday, November 15th from 5-7pm. Here is their website, and their address is 424 Locust St, Chillicothe, MO 64601.

Upcoming: Outta Pocket Exhibition at Manhattan Arts Center

I was juried into the national ceramics exhibition Outta Pocket by juror Nicholas Geankoplis who serves as the ceramics program director at Kansas State University. This exhibition “highlights creative work using clay or ceramics in an atypical, non-traditional, eclectic or eccentric way.” My included piece is Symbolism, which is an acrylic painting on five partially deglazed 19th century ceramic tiles and tile fragments.

Outta Pocket is on exhibit from July 29 - August 23, 2024 at the Manhattan Arts Center, Philip & Jeune Kirmser Gallery, 1520 Poyntz Ave., Manhattan, KS 66502. There will be three show awards announced at the closing reception on August 23.

Advance to Gogh Show is Up - With My Scra-baa Junior Piece!

KTIV chose to use footage of me looking at artwork to illustrate their article about the Advance to Gogh event.

Just a reminder that I’m participating in a large group exhibition of over 40 Siouxland artists: Advance to Gogh. The opening artwalk receptions for this event (held at the Sioux City Art Center, Gallery 103, Three Rivers Gallery, Art SUX, and Vangarde Arts) was on Thursday, July 11th. I’m unclear on exactly when each of the participating venues will take down the show, but I believe it’s up at least through mid-August.

To the right, you can see an image of me looking at some of the exhibited artworks which was published by KTIV, and if you check the article and video out there’s more footage of me at the reception as well as their own event description and interviews.

In case you can’t make it, though, I’d like to share with you some images of what I did! In the random lottery, I drew the gameboard Scrabble Junior.

The original Scrabble Junior game board.

I decided to keep the illustration and prompt for “sheep” and then painted over all the rest of the illustrations and prompts, color matching with paint to “restore” the rest of the board to a clean, new appearance. Next, I painted a lamb at the base, added the words “& Shelby” to the wordmark, and carefully redrew the grid lines with marker.

Finally, I added words for sheep in many languages to illustrate how one plays Scra-baa Junior!

This is Scra-baa Junior (“A ewe-nique edition!”), mixed media including acrylic, marker, varnish, and glue on Scrabble Junior game board with game tiles, 2024.

Upcoming: Advance to Gogh Exhibition with People's Choice Award

The Advance to Gogh flyer for participating artists, designed by Jean-Guy Richard!

My amazing friend and artist Terri McGaffin has organized the Advance to Gogh exhibition taking place at multiple galleries in downtown Sioux City, and she and Gallery 103 invited me to participate!

51 artists including me brought game boards (and some included game pieces and boxes) to the lottery selection on April 6th. I drew #43, which was Scrabble Junior!

I’m looking forward to the opening artwalk on Thursday, July 11, 2024 at 5:30pm beginning at the Sioux City Art Center and proceeding to visit all of the included venues:

Sioux City Art Center
Gallery 103
Three Rivers Gallery
Art SUX
Vangarde Arts

There will also be a People’s Choice Award with online voting, so stay tuned as I share more information about that as it becomes available! If you want to visit Gallery 103, it’s located on the ground floor of the Ho-Chunk Centre at 600 4th St, Sioux City, IA 51101.

I have to commend Terri - organizing such a big event across multiple galleries and organizations is a real labor of love and she’s doing a fantastic job with it.

As you can see below, the folks at the Tubac Center for the Arts used my painting Syncretism as an advertisement of the show on their Instagram, which is cool!

In more good news, I’ve also been juried into the upcoming 29th Arts North International 2024 exhibition which is hosted in Hopkins, Minnesota! Upcoming: People and the Planet Exhibition at Touchstone Gallery

My Aedes aegypti mosquito painting Hosts was juried into the upcoming People and the Planet exhibition at Touchstone Gallery in Washington, D.C. There is both a more selective in-person and a larger virtual gallery, and my work was accepted for both. When I applied, I thought given the show dates that I could make their mailing deadline after my return to the US, but they’d like it earlier than I expected so I had to elect to only exhibit in the virtual portion. The show will be on view from August 2-August 27, 2023!

Upcoming: Whiterock Art at the Betty Strong Center!

You may remember I attended an artist residency at Whiterock Conservancy outside of Coon Rapids, IA, in summer 2021. My good friend and colleague Terri McGaffin had already completed a residency there that spring 2021, and turned me on to the opportunity. Another Sioux City artist, Pauline Sensenig, then followed suit this summer 2022.

All of us will be exhibiting our work in a three-person show called Whiterock Art at the Betty Strong Encounter Center in the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center in Sioux City, IA, from October 2 - November 13, 2022. The reception will be on Sunday, October 2nd at 2pm, and I hope you can join us - there will be a reception and presentation by Whiterock’s own Liz Garst, co-founder and Board of Directors member of Whiterock Conservancy.

I designed our show logo, postcard, and poster (viewable at the exhibition) - below you can take a look at the digital postcard.

Indiana University Kokomo's Biosphere Juried International Exhibition Photos

Indiana University Kokomo's Biosphere juried international exhibition is ending today! Here are some photos of my bas relief Surface on display. I offered the option of exhibiting it on the wall or on a pedestal, and they chose to emphasize the QCC relief by going the pedestal route.

"Functional Aesthetic" Reception Photos

The reception for my Functional Aesthetic juried group show at the Le Mars Arts Center was really nice! I met some of the other exhibiting artists, and a group of my friends attended as well - then afterwards, we went out to dinner!

Here is an exhibition advertisement and a few photos of my five pieces in the show. In both the ad and the show design, my ceramics earned center stage! I was pretty pleased about that, since this is my first professional juried exhibition of ceramics; I only began working in the discipline in 2020 so it’s fulfilling to have my work in this field be received well so quickly. I haven’t even finished editing my portfolio images of all of my newest raku ceramics, so these pictures give you a sneak peek at some of my most recent ones.

Functional Aesthetic is still up for another couple of weeks, so please check it out if you’re in the area!

Red Bluff Gallery's Vibrant Landscapes Exhibition

My chromatogram “Literal Landscapes - Whiterock Conservancy 7, Fig Ave” was accepted into the juried online group exhibition Vibrant Landscapes hosted by Red Bluff Art Gallery (which is located in Red Bluff, CA).

You can check the virtual exhibition out here! For anyone who finds that virtual exhibition format hard to use, I’ve included a screenshot of my own “wall” in the Lovely Landscapes room of the Vibrant Landscapes exhibition below.

Upcoming: "Haunted" at the Washington Street Arts Center

I have artwork in the upcoming group exhibition Haunted, hosted by the Vermillion Area Arts Council at the Washington Street Arts Center (located at 202 N Washington St, Vermillion, South Dakota).

This show will run from October 24-31, 2021 from 6:30-8:00pm, if you’d like to stop by and check it out! Entry fee to the exhibition will be $2 for VAAC members or $5 for non-VAAC members. Masks will be required.

Upcoming Exhibition: Packard Group National Exhibition 2021

I have a painting, Comfort Zone, on display in the Packard Group National Exhibition 2021 in a drive-in movie art reception at No. 7 Center in Vermillion, SD, in addition to a virtual exhibition! The art reception will take place at 8:30pm on Friday, April 2nd, 2021, and on that same date an online gallery will open to viewers as well.

Current Exhibition: Rhode Island Watercolor Society's Painting Through the Pandemic

I have been juried into the Rhode Island Watercolor Society's Painting Through the Pandemic national online exhibition. They had just over 500 total entries and accepted 100 of those including my newest painting Velocity! The juror for this show is Jack Haran, former president of both the North River Arts Society and New England Watercolor Society.

The show will be posted online on their Facebook page on Saturday March 6th, 2021, with a virtual opening on the 6th at 7pm via Zoom - visit the show page on their website for more information and for the link.

Wild Things International Exhibition at the Cultural Center for Cape Cod

I’ve had two pieces - Balancing Act and Camelflage - selected for exhibition at the Cultural Center for Cape Cod in Massachusetts’ international show Wild Things which opens November 20, 2020. Only 87 of 707 entries (the most they’ve ever received!) made the cut, so I’m pleased that 2 of mine are included in that number!

You can already view the online gallery here!

Current Exhibition: The Art Museum of South Texas's Creative Distancing

I’m exhibiting my newest painting, Emerging, in the Art Museum of South Texas Chapman Gallery’s exhibition Creative Distancing: An Exhibition of Community Creativity. The show is being held online and awards will be selected by jurors and voted upon by the public at the close of the exhibition, so keep your fingers crossed for me! (I’m a little unclear as to how the voting will happen, but if I am notified I’ll share the news so that if you’d like to vote for my painting, you can.)
